How SmartyHome OS updates itself without USB — automatic and manual methods

How OTA Works

SmartyHome OS checks for updates every hour against the OS Cloud server. If a new version is available for your tablet's board and channel, it downloads and installs automatically.

Update Flow

Hourly check → detect new version → download .tar.gz → verify SHA256 → extract to staging → apply → reboot

Update Channels

Change your channel in Settings → OTA → Channel.

Manual Check

1. Go to Settings → OTA
2. Tap Check for Updates
3. If available: "Update v2.1.0 found — Download & Install?"
4. Tap Install
5. Tablet downloads, verifies, and stages the update
6. Tap Reboot Now to apply

Manual Update via USB

If the tablet is offline, update manually:

1. Download the update .tar.gz from hub.smartyhome.in/#downloads
2. Copy it to a USB drive
3. Insert USB into tablet
4. Go to Settings → OTA → Manual Update
5. Select the file from USB
6. Tap Install & Reboot

OTA Server

Updates are served from https://os-api.smartyhome.in and https://downloads.smartyhome.in. The tablet identifies itself with its hardware ID to get the correct update for its board and profile.

Version History

Rollback

If an update causes issues, you can roll back:

1. Go to Settings → OTA → Rollback
2. Select the previous version from the list
3. Tap Rollback & Reboot

Rollback keeps the previous version staged for 7 days after each update.
